Glossary
Tech terms, in plain language.
Short, honest definitions of the words you hear when buying technology services.
- Fractional CTO
- A senior technology leader who works for a company part-time — a few days a month — to set technical direction, choose vendors and oversee development, without being a full-time employee.
- Outsourced tech department
- An external partner that owns and runs a company’s technology — websites, software, integrations, accounts — for a monthly fee, combining technical leadership and delivery.
- Technical audit
- A structured review of a company’s systems, tools, costs and risks, ending in a prioritised roadmap of what to fix, automate or replace.
- Workflow automation
- Software that moves data and triggers actions between tools automatically — for example, turning every webshop order into an invoice without anyone retyping it.
- n8n
- An open-source workflow automation tool that connects apps through visual workflows and can be self-hosted, which keeps data on infrastructure you control.
- AI agent
- An AI system that not only answers questions but takes actions in other tools — looking up an order, creating a ticket, drafting an email — within limits set by people.
- Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
- A technique where an AI model answers using documents retrieved from a company’s own approved sources, instead of relying only on what it learned during training.
- GEO (generative engine optimisation)
- Making a website easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI answers to read, understand and recommend — the AI-era complement to SEO.
- llms.txt
- A plain-text file at the root of a website that gives AI assistants a concise, structured summary of the site and links to its most important pages.
- White-label development
- Development done by a partner under another company’s brand: the agency owns the client relationship, the partner builds and maintains the work behind the scenes.
- Headless CMS
- A content management system that stores content separately from the website’s design, so editors update text and images while developers keep the site fast and flexible.
- Reverse-charge VAT
- An EU rule where the buyer, not the seller, accounts for VAT on cross-border B2B services — so an EU company buying from a Hungarian supplier is invoiced without Hungarian VAT.
